Maria is an experienced senior executive and has held senior management and consulting roles across the private and public sector. She is currently the Vice-President Governance and Development at the University of Canberra with responsibility for overseeing and monitoring the governance, financial and risk performance of the UC Group. She also provides expert business and commercial advice.
Before joining the UC, Maria was a partner at Ernst & Young where she worked across the health, higher education, agriculture and transport portfolios. She has a strong financial management background and as a partner specialised in performance improvement, particularly in government and “business like” enterprises.
Maria’s management roles have included Deputy CEO, Defence Housing Australia Limited and Chief Financial Officer at ActewAGL and TransACT Communications. In these management roles Maria successfully worked with the executive teams and the governing bodies to improve operations and increase shareholder value. She has had responsibility for a range of corporate services functions, including human resources, finances, strategic planning, treasury, risk management, company secretary and stakeholder relationships.
From 2008 to 2011, Maria was a Council member at UC. She was also Chair of its Audit and Risk Committee and Finance Committee.
Maria holds a Bachelor of Economics from the ANU and an MBA from UC. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. She is a past winner of Telstra Business Women’s Awards Australian Government Private (ACT and National Finalist) and is a judge for the ACT Awards.
