Dr Stephen Weller new Chair of HES Board

Dr Stephen Weller has been appointed as the new Chair of the HES Board succeeding Stephen Somogyi who retired in December 2021.

Dr Weller is Chief Operating Officer & Deputy Vice-Chancellor at ACU and responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of the University in partnership with the Vice-Chancellor. He leads a portfolio responsible for operational and student services including student success; student engagement; student administration; marketing & external relations; planning & strategic management; information technology; properties & facilities management; human resources; finance & procurement; and governance & corporate services.

With more than 30 years’ experience in tertiary education across six universities in three states, Stephen also holds a PhD in Organisational Justice from Victoria University; a Master of Business Administration from the University of Technology, Sydney; a Master of Commerce, Employment Relations from the University of Western Sydney; and a Bachelor of Arts, Government and Public Administration from the University of Sydney.

Dr Weller takes over as Chair at a critical time for higher education in Australia and at an exciting time for HES as the organisation continues to evolve its service model to meet the sector’s current and emerging needs.

In the last twelve months, HES has delivered more than $20 million in technology-driven savings for the higher education sector, supported 11 communities of practice, developed a sector-wide benchmarking system, and managed the highly successful official tertiary credentials platform My eQuals.

“I look forward to working with our board and CEO, Andrew Trnacek to deliver an increasing array of technology services to assist universities in their migration to and management of the cloud, as well as the important work we do in facilitating collaboration and professional development throughout the sector. I would also like to thank Stephen Somogyi for his excellent service as Chair and wish him well for the future,” said Dr Weller.
